Two artists/parents/grandparents/suburbanites who wanted to take time off to travel. We sold our house and decided to do just that. After all, the only thing holding you back, is fear and common sense.

We scored with the Fjord

It takes 2 trains and a ferry to reach our next “home” Balestrand, on the Sognefjorden Fjord. While on the first train we learned that many people’s plans had to be readjusted because of an avalanche - fortunately it didn’t affect us. The really scenic train ride is the Flamsbana which travels between Myrdal and Flam. It goes from an elevation of 866 meters to 2 meters and the views are stunning. Once in Flam, we have time for lunch - we found a cafe away from all the tourists. Our waitress informs us that the local specialty is goat sausage - yes, please. It was really good. Time to board the fast ferry to Balestrand. The fjord is sort of surreal - it’s like walking into a postcard - so amazingly beautiful and unique in every direction you look.

Here we are on the platform waiting for the Flamsbana train. The temperature is cooler, but the sunshine feels great. We met some cool people on the train and we are all excited to see what awaits us in this Norwegian wonderland. (This one's for you…

I guess the Flamsbana train is called a scenic train ride for a reason. Picture perfect scenery around every bend. There’s snow up high in July - we’re not in Kansas anymore.

Arrived in Balestrand. This is a view of downtown. The fjord does funny things to the weather - constantly in flux, all the moisture creates a lush environment - moss and dew drops and berries - oh my!

Wandered out of town a bit. Can you imagine waking up to this every day - it’s going to be hard to leave.

The view from our hotel room - 180° of wow.
